Inthis book I have tried to answer the most frequent questions raisedat my presentations and seminars. I hope that this book helps youto find your way towards living a life in harmony with nature:whether it begins with a windowbox, a garden, or a field is notimportant. If this book helps one person to start thinkingecologically and independently, it will have done its job. I wishyou success putting your ideas and, perhaps, permaculture projectsof your own into practice.
Mostof all I would like to thank my family and my darling Vroni!Through-out our more than 36 years of marriage she has always stoodby me and supported me completely. Without her it would never havebeen possible to run the Krameterhof so successfully and still havetime to write a book. It is a joy to have such a wonderfulfamily.
您正在奥天时对朴门永绝开展战教教的奉献，对您以可连绝的圆法操纵天盘的许诺，your contribution to the developmentand teaching of permaculture in Austria ,you have my most heartfeltthanks.
Iwould also like to thank my colleagues of many years Erich Auernigand Elisabeth Mohr, who have always supported me in my work.Without their tireless efforts it would never have been possible toraise such a large amount of public interest in my farming methods. With their help, I have been able to show thousands of interestedvisitors around the Krameterhof and oversee countless projectsabroad. I have also had the opportunity to pass on my experiencethrough presentations and seminars. l would also like to express mygratitude to Mrs Maria Kendlbacher and her daughter Heidi who lookafter our guests on the Krameterhof. I also thank my brother andgamekeeper Martin Holzer.
Mydear friend Joe, for your commitment to using landSustainably，国度对无机农业的政策。
I havealready described how difficult it is to forge your own way in myfirst book. Some years ago I had a visitor from New Zealand. Thisvisitor was the late Joe Polaischer - our lives took similar paths. He chose to leave Austria and emigrate to New Zealand to set up apermaculture farm under difficult conditions. He had visitors allthe way from Europe and they were delighted with what he hadaccomplished. Joe was a remarkable man. He was a teacher and had agreat deal of practical experience, which is exactly what we needright now. His achievements should make it clear that there arepeople on the other side of the world who want to live in harmonywith their environment and not at odds with it. Treating our planetand fellow creatures with respect - and not being motivated byrivalry, jealousy or hatred - is the only way！
Manypeople think that this cannot happen in Europe, but we are alreadywell on our way! Most small farms only provide a subsidiary income, because the farmers do not know how to make enough money from themto live on any more. Today, very few people dare to forge their ownway and consider alternative farming methods. Instead many peoplelook to subsidy programmes to tell them how to run their businessesand alter their farms accordingly.Either that or quantityis prioritised over quality and farmers try to compensate for lowprices with a larger volume of produce. The result is a monoculturemaintained with large quantities of chemicals. Many people aredeterred by the bureaucratic obstacles that are put in their waywhen they try to practice alternative farming methods. It is everyperson’s duty to defend their rights, land and even their conceptof democracy and make them their guiding principles. If we do not, there is a real danger of finding ourselves in an administrativeand bureaucratic dictatorship.
I wantthis book to help people realise that trying to understand and livein harmony with nature instead of fighting against it is well worththe effort. On the countless trips I have made to oversee myprojects abroad, I have seen many terrible sights which have stayedwith me and even given me a few nightmares. Whether it is inBosnia, Colombia, Brazil, Thailand or in the United States, it isplain to see how irresponsibly nature is treated everywhere. Manypeople seem to have lost their ability to think independently aboutor to feel responsibility for our planet and its future. The resultis a loss of respect for nature and our fellow creatures. Tens ofthousands of hectares of scrubland and rainforest are intentionallybeing burned to make way for monocultures and, of course, anywildlife is destroyed along with it.A small few profit at theexpense of large swathes of society, who generally do not know howto provide themselves with food. The poverty and hardship people endurein ‘developing countries’ knows no bounds ! Young and old alikeare treated like refuse and live on the street from hand to mouth.Only the powerful have rights, which I have seen and experiencedfor myself . In addition, this happens in areas where no one shouldhave to go hungry, because the soil is fertile and the weather isfavourable. There should be more than enough food for everyone. Many peoplehave lost their land to powerful landowners and with that theability to provide for their families. They have had theirindependence taken away, which then becomes very difficult to takeback. So many of these people live rough on the outskirts of townin terrible conditions, whilst their land is relentlesslyoverworked and ruined.
This is the secondbook I have written so far, to pass on my over 40 years ofexperience as a farmer practicing alternative agriculture. I wasinspired to do this by the many people who have come to visit theKrameterhof: among them teachers, professors and doctors as well asfarmers and gardeners. My darling wife, Vroni, and my children wereparticularly eager for me to put my experiences and discoveriesinto writing. My first book, an autobiography entitledThe Rebel Farmer , sold over120,000 copies in just under two years and was a great success. Itwas presented with a golden book award and I received well over athousand letters from enthusiastic readers. This made me realisethat there was a great deal of interest in my work. When mydaughter Claudia and son Josef Andreas offered their help, I simplycould not refuse.
